Sleeping troubles. This is a complaint we often receive from clients. Insomnia, trouble getting to sleep, trouble staying asleep, over active mind, waking numerous times during the night, over thinking, restless legs.. the list goes on...
If you experience sleeping troubles, there are Ayurvedic options for you.
Day-sleeping is generally contraindicated, as we have mentioned in our posts previously. However, there are exceptions to this rule. If you are exhausted from physical activity, study, after walking long distances, emaciated, weak, or elderly to name a few.
To avoid afternoon sleep, we must ensure our nightly sleeping routine is adequate for the body to fully rest and restore.
Do you have trouble falling asleep? Having a night time routine is one way of settling you body to sleep and some recommendations to assist are below:
- Having a warm turmeric milk drink before bed (golden milk)
- Massaging the feet at night before sleep with coconut oil or sesame oil
- Turning off electronics and avoiding tv for an hour before bed
- Ensuring your bedroom is calm and relaxing - soft colours, feng shui, aromatics, gentle meditation music
- Massaging face and head before sleep
What are some of the causes of insomnia from an Ayurvedic perspective?
- Dry foods
- Mental tension/stress
- Going to bed too late at night
- Uncomfortable bed, uncomfortable pillow
- Too hot/cold
- The body is unprepared for sleep
- Busy mind/ to do list/checking things off/ruminating
If you struggle with sleep, the best place to start is with a consultation to discuss options for you. Some of the recommendations mentioned above may not be suited for you, based on your unique situation and body composition. We suggest booking a consult to see what is at the root of your sleep issues and having a tailored treatment program organised for you.
